WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., May 2, 2006 — On May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Bronfman Science Center on the Williams campus, the Williams Christian Fellowship, in conjunction with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, will host a symposium on the 200th anniversary of the Haystack Prayer Meeting.
Daniel Jeyaraj, the Judson-DeFreitas Associate Professor of World Christianity at the Andover-Newton Theological School will speak on “The Relevancy of Missions in the 21st Century.”
Jeyaraj is an Indian theologian with deep interests in World Christianity. His teaching and research primarily deal with the dynamics of Christian missions and their interaction with native cultures. He is a leading authority on the study of the Tranquebar Mission and the emergence of Protestant churches in India (during the eighteenth century).
Sharon Taylor, Director of the Franklin Trask Library, Andover-Newton Theological School will speak on “The Historical Impact of the Haystack Five.” These talks will be followed by a short time of questions for the presenters.
Taylor received her Th. M. from Princeton Theological Seminary and her Ph.D. from Boston College. She has lectured extensively on the history of the American Missions Movement. She is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the American Society of Church History and is also an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA).”
