Professor Chad Topaz is awarded for social justice work in the mathematical community.

Chad M. Topaz, professor of complex systems, has been named the recipient of the Association for Women in Mathematics’ (AWM) Mary and Alfie Gray Award for Social Justice. Topaz, who is also co-founder of the Institute for the Quantitative Study of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, is scheduled to receive the award at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Seattle, Wash., in January 2025. 

The AWM states in its press release that Topaz’s “collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to research and energetic mentorship and leadership have profoundly shaped the mathematical community’s capacity to bring clarity, vision, and creativity to the cause of justice in our society.”
