In Memoriam
Williams said goodbye to William “Bill” Chase Grant Jr., the Samuel Fessenden Clarke Professor of Biology, Emeritus, in November 2019. He was 95.
During his 35 years at the college, he served as chair of the biology department and chair of the Science Executive Committee. He also spent a year at Oxford University as a visiting research scientist.
Colleagues remember Grant as an educator who was knowledgeable about all the subdisciplines within his field. “He could talk with anyone about their work, understand its importance and, with his questions or comments, promote new ideas and interpretations,” says Heather Williams, the William Dwight Whitney Professor of Biology.
Grant’s survivors include two children.
